Meet Our Staff

The Reverend Dr. Gregory W. Schmidt

Greg Schmidt became our minister in August 2003.  He is a graduate of Andover Newton Theological School in Newton, MA where he received his Master of Divinity in 1984.  Greg earned a Doctor of Ministry from Hartford Seminary in 1999.

Greg brings with him over 25 years of ordained ministerial experience including preaching, administration, pastoral care, youth ministry, and counseling.  Before coming to Harvard, Greg served churches in Duxbury MA, Ithaca NY, Short Hills NJ and Shelton CT.

He is involved in all aspects of our church from leading the worship services and preaching every week, to working with our Boards and committees, visiting our members and reaching out to the wider community.  In addition to volunteer work here in Harvard, Greg serves the Massachusetts Conference of the United Church of Christ by serving on several boards (Continuing Education, Fitness Review).  Greg also leads a Community of Practice.

Greg and his wife, Sharon, have been married since 1987.  They have two sons, Matthew and Jonathan.

Thomas B. Dawkins, Music Director

Thomas has been providing music for our worship services since 2008.  Thomas directs the church’s adult choir and provides accompaniment for the Cherub Choir.  He is an accomplished pianist, vocalist, bassoonist, and oboist, and can play pretty much every instrument you hand to him.  Thomas is a graduate of Brandeis University and, as a vocalist, a member of both Handel and Haydn Society and Boston Baroque.

More information on Thomas can be found on his website,

Susan Buck, Office Administrator

Susan Buck has been running the church office since 2000 and was the first to take the job as "administrator".  She is generally in the office from 9-3, Monday thru Friday.  Susan is the go-to person for Sunday Bulletins, e-newsletters, and use of the church building by both our church members and outside groups.   Hers is the voice on the other end of the phone when you call the church office, whether to add a name to the prayer list or ask more about a particular area of church life.

John Cavanaugh, Sexton

John Cavanaugh joined the staff as our sexton in 2005.  He cleans and maintains our wonderful building and magically appears after special services and events to make sure we’re looking our best for the next round of activities.  John and his family are longtime residents of Harvard.
